Contacting the Company
You can make initial contact by e-mail, fax or by letter. Evidence of this initial contact must be placed in the study to gain the marks. You must speak to the company by phone and get a contact name and number prior to the visit.
The Preliminary visits The preliminary visits must have taken place at least two weeks prior to your placement so that a plan can be agreed between the company, yourself and school. Follow the tasks on this page.
a) Introduce yourself When you arrive go to the reception and give your name and the name of the contact (your host) to whom you have spoken and ask to see the person concerned.
b) Health and safety You must discuss health and safety issues with your host, i.e. clothing requirements - hats and safety boots, supervision and emergency procedures (fire).
c) Outline the aims of the case study

Discuss and identify the relevant course specification points and produce a table showing how you will find the information out. Click here to link to Selecting Specification
Discuss and identify the focused study topic that will provide you with the greatest opportunities and produce a table showing what research strategy you will use for each topic selected.

Draw up a list of aims & objectives for the visit.

d) The time plan Using the information in the two tables you ahve just produced with your host draw up a draft time plan.

Some parts to the plan that are specifically detailed can be presented in more depth.
e) Company Overview Conduct a general company overview collecting company information on the company and their product or service. A list of questions to ask, prepared before you go is a good idea to make this effective.
f) Placement dates and time Thank your host for their time and confirm your placement date and the hours of your attendance and any special requirements you should be made aware of, like who you will be working with and/or where you will be working.
